Best CPU Under $100?

I'm trying to build a budget PC system (around $600) and am wondering what the best CPU is for under $100. I have no preference for Intel or AMD, and am not looking for max performance, just the most bang for my buck.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Pentium G860/G840.
  2. What are your thoughts on the AMD Athlon II X4? It's a quad core and it's $20 cheaper then your suggestion, but has only 2.6 GHz.
  3. Intel Pentium G870 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80623G870

With a $600 budget I believe that you can get this cpu to work with your budget.

    Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32120

The good thing about this cpu is that it has hyperthreading and gives you four core threads for processing.

Here is a build that includes the i3-2120 cpu and the total for thid comes to $597.92 and since I didn't know all of your details of what you need and don't need this is at this point just a guess. But you can look at it and see what you think and it's just an example of a build in your budget range that includes the 2120 cpu.
  5. Is moving up to quad core worth it?
  6. It depends on what you'll be doing with this computer.
  7. I'm looking to use it primarily for gaming, but I will also be running some chess computers.
  8. By the way, thank you inzone for the build suggestion. I'll take into consderation.
  9. For BF3, i5 may be worth considering. For chess, that would depend on your patience. For most other stuff, it depends on how high your expectations of running future games are. If you are targeting games 1-2 years in the future, i3 could be good enough. If you want to stretch the PC for 3-5 years, i5 would be a safer bet.
