This probably has a very simple yes or no answer, so here we go.

At the moment, at home we have a wired Dlink 4 port router connecting three 98SE machines and an XP machine. This router also connects us to the internut.

However, down the track I am looking to add more machines to the network - a laptop and a couple of older desktops as file servers, as well as my Xbox.

Can I connect this new router to the old one with Cat5 cable, and still access the internet on any machines I connect to the new router?

no you should not buy two routers

If each router is running NAT you could run into some connections problems.

Go out and buy like a 5-10 port switch and you should be fine. Just plug the switch into the route and your good to go. Plus you can pick up a decent switch for less than 30 bucks.
