I've seen articles saying that Radeon HD cards can do 3D gaming if you jump through some hoops,
but AMD's site doesn't say anything about 3D support on their Radeon HD cards.

Can someone please explain?

Look up HD3D on AMD's site. The 5000 series and newer support it. The trick is to make sure to get the right monitor for the best results (Displayport connection is important for the best experience). You also need 3rd party software to support the HD3D, but some monitors come with it already.
