Your question

Should I be afraid of 2x GPU setups?

By afraid I mean hesitant, by hesitant I mean will I regret doing it?

I was looking at 2x 6770 or 2x 550-ti

IIRC they only need one power connector so Antec 620 HCG should do it.

Running a viable mobo and Windows 7 x64

Or is it not worth the potential issues and therefor a waste of time?

You will only regret it if you crossfire 2 under powered cards as they will be more prone to suffer the micro Stuttering problem.
The Safest option is always a Single Powerful GPU
