Problem with graphics card nvidia 460

Hey my graphics card isnt working properly welll the computer turns on but the dvi portsi n the back might not be working its a new card my friend said it works he gave it to me but i used a nexxtech vga to dvi female adapter because my monitor was only vga capable the monitor says No signal on the screen and goes into power saver but the mon works on other computers so i was wondering is it the adapter or the video card what adapter would i need if i got the wrong one heres the
