Hello

Which mid level AMD cards would be good for single monitor resolution and something good for gaming and video work?

The build quality is just fine fpr amd and the fan situation is alleviated with a non reference such as the twin frozr models.
If you need cuda acceleration in your video work would be the main reason to go with nvidia over amd.
If not any resolutiom 1920x1080 and under you have the 5770,6770, 6850 and 6870 all covering the mid range.
Nvidia you have the 550ti, 460, and 560 covering their midrange. What is your budget and psu?

We have to stick with AMD. So what are the main differences between the models above and which will be best to have for the next 2 years?

the 6870 is the most powerful of the mid range with the 5770 being the slowest out of the listed.
what games at what resolution are you going to be playing as well as your power supply?
to last longer i would always go with the faster of the range for pricing. also getting your budget would help alot as well in assessing your situation

Resolution will be 1920x 1080 and not sure what games yet. Stuff like Starcraft 2, WOW, Star Wars Old Republic, Dungeon Siege III, Brink, Rift, etc.

And some video editing(not professional)

Thanks

AMD rules the mid card range, the 6790 beats the GTX 550 ti 90% of the time and it's cheaper.

Same applies to the 6870 vs gtx 560 (non ti)

AMD will always be cheaper and always be slightly faster, especially in the mid card range.

hd 6870 will be good enough for med high resolution like 1080p for 2 years in the amd mid range gpus even if u cant afford that much hd 6850 will also performs best at the price point and performance and can play all games till next 2 years on med settings without lags.:)
