I sent my Netgear WGM124 back for a refund. After contacting Netgear tech support and getting my case elevated to level 2 technicians, they told me that the firmware didn't support macs???? What bull is that? DHCP is DCHP. The Speedstream 5100B gives my mom's computer an ip fine. I'm going to stick with one of the other brands. Which one do you guys think I should get? Should I just jump for the Linksys with SRX? Or is there a cheaper alternative that uses a range extender? What is the best way to do this?
Belkin is offering best bang for the wireless buck. Linksys is ok to, but they are spendy, and in my experience have no coverage with stock antennas (well, maybe 30 feet at the best)
..this is very useful and helpful place for information...
Even though that was a bull, Netgear is all it is "net gear" (only gear that is left after all of the expances, which is pretty much little (just kidding ;o)>

So what would be the best bet for good range on the cheap? DIY with my Linux Box and A massive antenna mounted above the computer? I haven't heard much good about Belkin, I have heard that thier wireless stuff is a little sketchy.
If you ask about sketchy, then everything that is customer targeted is sketchy. Nothing I've tried works as it is advestized, so just find yourself what best fits your budget (I would go for a DLink 624 kit, it is cheapest and works ok if you don't mind ocasional disconnect 5-10 sec reconnect (as most of them do)).
By the way, it is not a good idea to run powerfool equipment sitting next to you caz of unnesessary radiation. I would run a looooong cable from the place I sit or get a directional antennas (which have best range to begin with) and point them away from myself.

While common as problems go frequent and repetitive disconnects are the exception rather than the rule generally speaking.
As for the harmful microwaves comment, more rubbish and pretty standard fare for the poster.
It is true however that with the price these devices sell the dud rate is relatively high. High being perhaps somewhere in the teens in percentage points but overall if you set them up properly and have a friendly wireless environment they are reliable and dependable. Of the consumer WLAN's I've put in, I'd say anywhere from 10 to 20% require serious tweaking or even an RMA on the gear. The vast majority are solid if not rock solid. It helps to know what your doing and what your talking about when setting these up or giving advice.
I did an rma/refund. I hope compuplus comes through though, They are rated fine on TG Stores, but on resellerratings alot of people are complaining about thier horrible service. I wish I would have remembered to look there before ordering anything!
Well, in conclusion I did get my money back, and the customer service rep was polite about everything. I still haven't bought anything, because at this point I don't know whether to buy a more expensive Mimo Router or something else. I'm still going over the possibilities.
