I am thinking of upgrading my pc a bit.

Is it worth upgrading from a ATI 4890 card if my monitors max resolution is only 1024 x 768?

Like is it worth it at all?

At the moment i can run everything on max.. apart from skyrim, though i think that is just a poorly optimized game(i get same issues on max as i do on lowest...)

thanks

What are your other components?(CPU, RAM, etc.)

That gpu should be plent for that resolution, and Skyrim is somewhat CPU bound, so that may be what is holding you back.

DDR2 RAM doesn't make a huge difference with 1333 DDR3. I don;t think you need to upgrade, the 4890 is a great GPU for that small of a res / monitor. I would just invest in a better 1080p screen.

i have a 19inch square monitor, it's a dell ultra sharp and it does 1280 x 1024. I like it, in fact i purposely got it over a 22 inch monitor because the 1680 x 1050 resolution really taxes performance, by quite alot, it's like having a rank lower graphics card. Especially if you want to do 4xaa and 8xaf and want to get a guaranteed 60FPS average. OP do you have an AM2+ motherboard? If you do then you could perhaps think about upgrading your CPU to a phenom ii x3/ x4. Is your memory 800mhz?

Maybe you could think about getting a bigger screen, they don't do 19 inch 1280x 1024 monitors any more, they do those widescreen ones, but they make the image look short and stubby. i'm sure you monitor is 1280x1024 isn't it unless you have something smaller than a 17 inch.

I have an phenom x4, and my memory is 1066mhz. That is a darn shame if you cannot get the kind of monitor you have anymore. I would snap that up in an instant if waht you have told me is true!

The monitor i am using is about 15inches. Its not widescreen either.

if you really want try searching for a phenom ii though. They're more energy efficient, and they'll give you quite a performance increase, the other good thing is that they're all mostly bellow £110 or $130. I think the better CPU you have the higher your lowest FPS is, and you can still probably buy a 19 inch 1280x1024 monitor out there, look on ebay that's where i got mine.
