Need help to upgrade my cpu

i have a gigabyte( h61m-s2p-b3) motherboard and i know it will run i3/i5/i7
and i am runing( i3) now but i want to upgrade to( i5 )
now i have tryed just changing over the cpu and useing the new fan
but that did not work it just starts ran for a minet and stops then started and stoped over and over
so now im at a loss as to what i should do now???

What CPUs are you working with (which i3 and i5).

the i3 is intel lga 1155)( and i5 intel -3570 lga 1155) is that what you mean

It should work with your mobo, if you put the i3 back in does it work?

Hmmm, how about if you take out the GPU (if you have one)and put in the i5 and run of the integrated and see if that works.

with the i3 on the board update the motherboards bios. Your i5 is a newer generation if you dont have the latest Bios update it wont work

The bios already on the board supports the ivy chips, according to gigabytes support page i posted before.

yes i do have a gpu and no i havent pulled it out so i will try that

No the Bios version F6 supports Ivybridge... how do you know the OP has F6?..... all the OP's symptoms indicate they dont have F6 and this is a Bios issue.

I thought that F6 comes standard with the board?

Maybe if you buy the board now but maybe not if it was bought earlier, even if you buy one now it may be old stock with an older BIOS version. 1st thing to try before adding a new CPU to any motherboard is to update the BIOS it takes a few minutes and means its 1 thing you can then rule out as an issue if things go wrong

download it as jay said or look in the gigabyte folder on your start menu there should be a program called @BIOS use this to do it.
