I tried to run three monitors (all at 1680x1050) by using two dvi cables and one hdmi to dvi cable. this didnt work and i found out that to use 3 monitors a mini displayport must be used. So im wondering if i am able to use 1 dvi cable, 1 hdmi to dvi cable, and 1 mini displayport to dvi cable. would that work???

Solution

Okay, it is quite standard connectivity: 1xDVI + 1xDVI-S, 1xHDMI (but you can use either the DVI-S or this) & 2 x miniDP.
If you haven't bought any adaptor yet, just use the following connection:

-----------------------Graphics Card Port
Monitor 1 <---------> DVI (via direct DVI cable)
Monitor 2 <---------> DVI-S (via direct DVI cable)
Monitor 3 <--------->miniDP (via miniDP to DVI active adaptor + DVI to DVI cable)

If you have already bought the HDMI to DVI cable ( too bad because you don't really need it ), then you can use the following configuration:

-----------------------Graphics Card Port
Monitor 1 <---------> DVI (via direct DVI cable)
Monitor 2 <--------->HDMI (via HDMI to...

Yes. But make sure you buy an active minidisplay port to dvi converter. Actually, you do not need to use an HDMI to dvi cable*. You can plug in the 2nd DVI cable into the DVI-S so you will have 2xDVI + 1 mini displayport to dvi cable.

What is your graphics card brand & model?

*Note: You can use either the DVI-S or the HDMI but not at the same time.

Here is the sample miniDP to DVI adaptor. You can choose other brands that fits your budget. Some are as low as $10.
