I'm planning to buy the hd 6770 because it's currently under $100, but how long would this card last me for current and future games being playing at 1600x900.
Or do I really need to suck it up and buy a 6850 for an extra $50. How much longer would this card last me before games gets too advance for it.
Depends on how much (or little) eye candy you can live with. I would rather drop the extra $50 for the HD 6850. If you can live with medium quality graphics, then probably 3 - 4 years.
The HD 6670 is actually a Radeon HD 5770 which was released back in October 2009. So... it's basically a little over 2 years old already.

It should last you several years, you will just gradually have to lower the settings. The 6850 is a more powerful card and will last you longer, but I doubt the difference in lasting time will be very huge. I'd recommend the 6770 and just upgrade it when you feel it doesn't do the job good enough anymore.

Perhaps a better question would be to ask, "How long before you upgrade your monitor?" You obviously don't need a 6850 for your current setup. Also I'm wondering what games you plan to play, etc.
The current hardware can be expected to last 3 years. How fast software development increases in proportion to hardware performance increases is hard to say. Unfortunately, much of game development right now is focused on consoles, so until some newer consoles come out with stronger hardware you'll be safe playing most mainstream titles with a 6770.
It looks like you may not be a hard core gamer, considering your video card choices. So I wouldn't worry too much about games, I'd be more concerned with your future upgrade plans.
an hd 6850 is not about $50 more then hd 6770 its about $30-40 more then it.hd 6850 will be more better then hd 6770 and it will go about 2 years with that resolution for mordern games which is quite enough and sapphire will be the better choice for an cheaper price and better performance.
