I got an x79 mobo and I'm still running a 9800gt! Should I just get a 580 now and sli it up later on
when the prices drop or wait for kepler?

I think Kepler is supposed to come out in May or June, so you need to ask yourself if you are willing to wait that long for Kepler.

The 580 or wait? It depends on what you want to do for the now. Can you live with the 9800gt? The Keplers are supposed to be affordable. Now the 580 depending on your PSU.

You can get one now wait for the prices to fall and get another one or buy one now and when the Kepler come's out sell the 580 and go with the new Kepler.

Me I would get the 580 wait for prices drop and get another 580 and In a year sell both and start with the Kepler. That way all the bugs are worked out of the Kepler. Good luck on your choice anyway you go is better that what you have now.

Considering the price's of the GTX580 compared to the 7950 I would rather go with a 7950.

The current PCI-E 3.0 cards still can't saturate the full bandwidth of a PCI-E 2.0 slot.

^ though in compute tasks, the extra bandwidth of pcie3.0 does has ~10% improvement
but NOT IN GAMES.

thanx for the suggestions. I just did a new build with the 3930k and I got a 1200watt psu so having an sli setup is no problem. My mobo allows me to have 4 gpus but that might be overkill. I think I'll just settle on the evga 580 classified and use the step up program if I want to upgrade
