Is it a integrated card? or a PCI card?

Do you have blinking green or orange lights when connected?

Do you get a limited connection message?

I'll be home in a hour or 2 and i'll check back.

1394 net adapters are for Firewire devices.

check if anything is listed under Other Devices in the Device Manager

How are you connecting to the internet? Did you just plop the thing down in your house or did you wire it to the modem/router. You need to have a working network adapter in the system, check for lights on the network card, should be 2 of them, one solid one blinking. If not, you need to install the drivers for it. Or possibly get a new network card if the one you have is installed but not working.

There is nothing else under it, there is question mark under Ethernet.

Uninstall and re-install the network card then, you'd need to get the drivers for your model from Gateway support site.
