I custom built my computer about 3 months ago, since then ive been having overheating problems, for a while i took a break from heavy duty pc games so i forgot about the problem, today ive come back to tackle the problem and since then its been overheating constantly.

It lasts about 2 hours in Dota 2 (last game to shut it down) so it takes a while, so i used a stress test with OCCT CPU ran fine for about an hour, i run the 3d test with my GPU and within ten seconds it shuts down with no warning, the temp hits about 61 before it shuts of ive tried everything i can think of and its still happening.

My specs are

Operating System
MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
CPU
AMD Phenom II X4 965 26 °C

Alot of people may say PSU but im using a 800W PSU so i doubt thatd be the problem, im also using a thermal take frio heatsink and have changed the paste recently. im all out of ideas so i hope someone may know the problem im tearing my hair out!

Solution

Winpower have a reputation for low budget PSU's with poor performance and value.

Your power supply only has 34A on the +12v rail. A good quality 850w power supply will usually have around 70A on the +12v rail.

So in actuality your power supply is a 400w power supply masquerading as a 850w power supply.

Amperage is what is important in power supplies not wattage.

shouldn't crash until the 70's really.
download MSI afterburner and msi kombustor, and gpuz. set the 6950 back to stock settings in afterburner. run kombustor while looking at gpuz to see if your voltage is right for stock. if not see if you can unlock voltage control in afterburner's settings and raise/lower voltage so that it is correct.

Dunno if you can read the log, but i used OCCT to cause the overheat and using MSI Afterburner logged the temp and speeds

aha! no worries, it seemed a bit crap -.-' can you reccomend any good psu's that may be better for my rig? :/ as i say its a custom build and it WAS my first build so i just grabbed the cheapest psu to keep costs down but i spose i may be paying the price, i have a mate who has a good rig, so ima double check it in his comp to see if it does work correctly cus im not ruling out the card as a dud yet but if it is PSU i dunno where to start with PSU ;/

no problem.
Seasonic, corsair, or antech 550w and above can power that rig just fine. if you want to go 600-700-850 whatever its up to you. a quality power supply will not cost 28 pounds.
also make sure these supplies have at least an 80+bronze rating on them .
and yes, trying that card on another rig will definitely let you know if the psu is the culprit.
if it works, then go get yourself a good little box from corsair, etc.

As flint said, very nice choice.

The power supply is one part you should never skimp on, like you've just found out.

Yeah, I guess I shoulda asked about the power supply... I just figured it was the card since it lasted longer when the cooling was at 100% thereby causing incidental airflow to some maybe overheating parts of the card :) (as I've had this problem in the past with my 5670, and since most companies dont put temp probes on the VRMs themselves :) )
