I'm thinking about getting a new processor. Either the AMD FX-8120 or 8150. The hard decision is about the clock speeds. The 8150 is clocked at 3.6 but the 8120 is at 3.1. I can either spend $40 less and get the 8120 but overclock to like 4.0 (I have watercooling). What should I get and what do you guys think is the best thing to do.

Solution
Get the 8120. It's the same chip as the 8150, just clocked 500MHz less. With water, you should be able to easily hit 4.5+ (depending on what cooler you have).

Thanks guys for the fast replies. I just ordered the 8120.

I know its late but just for future reference, the 8150 is binned a little higher and that means possibly better and higher overclocking. If youre wanting to overclock as high as possible, it might be worth going with the 8150. If youre not wanting to do hardcore overclocking, then the 8120 is the way to go.

I bought my 8150 just for this reason, so I could have a little more fun overclocking and so far its paid off. Im at 4.4 on STOCK voltage! Im only limited right now by my Hyper 212+. I could do 4.5 and game just fine but my temps get over 61C with Intel Burn Test and I thats over my own self imposed limit. Im saving up for a H100 and then Ill be able to really crank on this thing and am hoping for 4.8 maybe. ;)

Actually, I've been searching around on this since I was curious of what makes 8150 $40 more. It seems that the only effect AMD's binning has is being able to run at lower voltage under a certain threshold. The best explanation I've found is this post on Overclock.net:
The 8150 is supposed to clock higher with lower voltage than the 8120..

Both SKUs are 125w.
The story changes when both CPUs are clocked up to 4.5GHz.
Both consume about the same amount of voltage at that frequency.

Yeah I dont think it makes a huge difference. Its definitely not worth $40 difference though. I just got lucky and caught mine on sale at Newegg for $189 so it was only $20 more than the 8120 was at that point. Id say it might be worth an extra MHz or 2 at the most. But the lower voltage is nice to have as well. I was very pleased I could do 4.4 on stock V. Just need a better cooler to really open this sucker up.
