DDR CAS Latency

In a recent motherboard review, Sir Tom, made a strong recommendation to use CL2 PC2100 to achieve throughput value over pc133, as the CL2.5 PC2100 will lag enough to ruin any DDR advantage. I've scrounged like crazy, but can't locate true PC2100 CL2. A rightious tech recommended adjusting the voltage on the CL2.5 (thus evolving to CL2) What do my esteemed colegues think?

That would not be recommended. You'd be running your memory out of spec. That could cause random crashes/freezes/reboots. System stability is important. Check www.pricewatch.com. Many listings will tell you the CAS rating.

this site has cas2 ddr memory cheaper than Rdram too! Pc 2400 ( overclocking memory )This would be the rough equivelent of pc-150 in a SDRAM module

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!

I has been rummored that the Micron/Crucial DDR modules will run at cas2, even though they default to 2.5. These are top quality chips, and the manufacturer will mark them cas2.5 if a certain percentage does not meet the high standards. That is not to say that a large percentage do work flawlessly at the faster settings, which seems to be the case.

check them out <A HREF="http://www.crucial.com/store/ListModule.asp?module=184-pin+DIMM" target="_new">here</A>

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

So each module has it's natural min. CL and the MFG's rating is the min. they are willing to warranty? And you can try for a lower CL in your bios settings, but no guarentees below the MFG's rating?

I run my crucial pc2100 ddr 256 dimm at a cas latency of 2. and it runs stable. Crucial is really good memory for a very cheap price and its just getting cheaper.

I'm living proof of that. I've got CAS2.5 Crucial and it runs fine at CAS2. All my memory programs and benchmarks identify it as CAS2. And, there is a performance difference when I alter it back to CAS2.5.
