AMD Opteron Price Cuts

AMD is planning handsome price cuts across the board on all Opteron models from S939 to S940 to the S1207 and SE to regular to HE. There can of course be various reasons for this from increased Intel competition to clearing old Rev E stock, but I'll be optimistic and suggest perhaps this is a pre-65nm repositioning of current models.

Anyways, for those of you who still have S939 platforms and want to upgrade, those Opteron 1xx are looking like a bargain especially considering they still have their 1MB of L2 cache intact. I'm not sure on the status of the current batchs but I'm sure the Opteron 165 and co can still live up to their great overclocking reputation.

But i have already found the opteron 175 for 250$ on newegg so i dont know what the hell is up. Prices get even lower maybe?

I guess some people have already started offering lower prices. Either that or AMD is just lowering MSRP to reflect actual retail price. But, many companies were already trying to clear Rev E stock so it isn't surprising there are already good deals to be had.

For JumpingJack, if I'm not mistaken a decent overclock with a good cooler is from 1.8GHz stock to around 2.6GHz on the Opteron 165. It had/has very good potential.

Anyway, still a great chip, and I got wusy's results on the overclock (Currently running at 2650 but have pushed it to primestable 2800). That means an something between an FX60 and FX62 for USD240. So it's all good.

Hello, I'm a new user to the forumz and this is my 1st post so just wanted to say HEY!

well......um......so out of the whole opteron family, the 165 is the best bang for the buck because it's the best overclocker?
I'm just wondering because I'm in need of a new CPU and want to leave my socket 939 64 3000+ and go Dual Core and am now having second thoughts about getting an x2 3800 after reading this post! :?

(see sig) I know NF3 chipsets are a thing of the past but i'm waiting 'till at least next spring before upgrading my entire system, so a cheap opteron would suffice me until then, but only if i can run it on my current rig. Best way to tell is go to the motherboard maker's website and see if there is a bios update that will allow a dual core. If not then most likely it will not run a dual core.

Tbh i did check the website and the only information about supported Cpus they gave was about the "E6" revision of no perticular cpu type (ie. dual cores and/or opteron etc). So this is why i asked here. I have the very latest (or final for that matter) revision of the bios for my mobo installed right now.

It does make sense to me.

65nm + new upcoming u/arch should lower current Opteron prices.

I believe IBM would be the first server company to use 16.000 bareclona cores for their road runner supercomputer which is a hybrid based of 16.000 Opteron + 16.000 cell processors. Cray will also enjoy being one of the first ones to use Barcelona cores for their supercomputer. I really don't know the amount Cray will use, but some reports says that this machine can achieve more than 1-petaflop sustained peak.
I guess once does deals are on-schedule, we'll see current Rev. F and s940 Opterons prices decrease even more.

i have a 148 opti @2.8 but i have seen it at 3.0ghz on air.

BaronMatrix, you've got it: BSMeT, class of 1982. But I haven't gone over to the "Dark Side" (yet). Still designing ingenious mechanisms and collecting patents.

BTW, that Opteron 165 is burning in right now. Pretty much doubled my SiSoft Sandra 2007 results (except file system). The XP is overclocked at 2.2Ghz on a NF2 mobo, while the Opteron is still at 1.8Ghz, on a NF4. 1GB of RAM in each, all sticks running at 200Mhz.
