Upgrading from Intel Core i7-870

I am looking to upgrade my CPU, but I don't have too much money on hand, so I was looking at am AMD alternative.

Specifically, I have been eyeballing an AMD FX-8150 Zambezi: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103960

I have no knowledge of AMD CPU products. So what I am basically asking is if the AMD FX-8150 is an upgrade from the Intel Core i7-870. If it is not, is there any AMD processor that would be an upgrade from my current CPU.

And if you could be so generous, to suggest a motherboard that would go well with the AMD CPU, my ATI Radeon HD 5770 GPU, and my 8 gb DDR3 RAM, that would be very nice.

^ Agreed. Just wait either until Piledriver or Haswell from Intel.

The 8150 will do a little better than the 870, based on clock speed alone, but not so much much better that it's worth the cost of upgrading the chip and motherboard.

If you really want to see a performance change I would be look at adding a SSD as a boot drive. For most people the much faster boot times and access times really help out.
