Inadequate Power

What symptoms would one notice if their power supply wasn't putting out enough power? I've seen all these claims for the need of 300 or 400 watts, but how do you know if you need that much. Afterall, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

What type of system do you have? Mind giving some specs?

Anyway, the most common thing would be instability and sometimes random reboots.

I'm now running an Athlon 850/Asus A7V133/256MB of SDRAM (PC133 that needed to be run at 100MHz?). I have a 40X CD-Rom, a HP CD-burner, 2 WD HD's, Diamond Stealth II 2d/3d card, Voodoo2 3d card, and Creative SB Live Value. This is all running off of my 235 watt AOpen ATX case/power supply.

Things seem to be stable right now. I've had problems since upgrading from a Celeron, but I think that was the whole memory issue. I've ordered a GeForce2 GTS 32MB to replace the Diamond card. Unfortunately, my Voodoo2 doesn't seem to work as well with the Athlon, but that's another story.

So, I have these spare parts to build another system...just need a case. My thought was to buy a 300W case for my current system and put the old stuff in my current case. But I like this case...it works well(so far). And it's not easy finding cases that I like. So...I don't want to change this one if I don't have to. Thanks...

Well, if it ain't broke, no need to fix it unless you really want to :)

Maybe you'll need a 300w later on, but that's a matter for later.
