7970. end of story haha. you can always crossfire another later if you need it, but you'll get better performance off the bat with a single 7970. plus you dont have to deal with the frustrations of crossfire.

7970 hands down. Had a 5870 as well, spent some time researching it and altho the 5870 is still a very viable card, it just lacks with 1 gb of vram. Had a 615 score in Heaven with my 5870 and an 1881 with my 7970 full blown OC. Pretty easy choice :)

5870 CF = 5970

6990 left 5970 in all bench with large margin..
and..
7970 almost same horse power with 6990..

but with 5870 in your rig, why should upgrade..?
5870 still can serve satisfy frame rate even in the HD resolution in almost all of the 3D game ..

tie with 6950 and 560Ti..

Not true. To turn up any kind of eye candy you need more than 1 gb in any resolution over 1080p. With my 5870 BF3 in ultra with no AA or deferred AA on it played smooth as silk. Turn those on and it was like a slide show on my 5870. With my 7970 I can max out everything in 1920x1200 and its just as smooth :)

Actually 5850 CF = a 5970. Two 5870s is a little above that. A better comparison would be the 6870 X2. It depends on the game but in some games on really high settings the 7970 has a big advantage over the 6870X2 and 5970 due to the extra RAM and other times not so much.

Two 5870s in CF is the most cost effective option and it's what I would do. I'm rather pleased with my two 5870s for the most part. If you don't care and have no problem buying a shiny new 7970 then go for it.

Yeah you're right.

If you're (very) hardcore gamer, well, maybe this is very important to slide AAF and AA to the most right of your screen... ;)

But if you're normal gamer, maybe you'll satified with ultra detail and minimal AAF/AA..

In my blurry eyes (well, i have -4 glasses), when i was playing in HD res (1920x1080), there almost no difference between max out AA/AAF and minimal AA/AAF..that's why i still satisfied with my old 5850..:D

just try to remind you, 7970 is very new right now..everything in the beginning of the lauch, have a very expensive price..

just wait for GeForce 6 class, and usually price of AMD 7 class will dropped..and the time is the best time to get this stuff..:)

ive done loads of real word tests and have to say the 5870 is a far better card

7970 same bf3 settings as my 5870, only 10 fps faster

the only thing good about the pos is the 3gb, i use 1 screen at 1080 and bf3 uses 2.2gb

^Troll much? You mean single 5870 is faster than 7970

Yes Mr. Quaddro is right, if the 600 Kepler GPU were launched, the prices of 7000 cards will soon be dropped in my opinion. Because the 7000 hasn't got any competition yet from nVidia, so this is a good way to get more money from stores, partners or AMD by increasing to a high price. But totally getting 7970 will be better, but if you wait till nVidia launched the 600 Kepler series, in my prediction the prices of 7970 will go down to about maybe $400...

for ppl who dont read the info.........................

Battlefield 3 on ASUS 7970 3GB one 1080 monitor

BF3 ASUS 7970 ultra setting showing the need for a min of 2gb on new cards.

video showing BF3 on ultra game and ultra driver settings

driver settings were...

8EQ AA EDGE DETECT
16x AF Anisotropic Filtering
Morphological Filtering
Tessellation
Catalyst AI Texture Filtering Quality
High Quality Anti Aliasing Mode
Super sample AA

the video is a slide show, with video at the end. the pic have been recorded 3x so have lost some quality

I cant recommend the next gen cards as they are only 10 fps faster the 5870 and the driver is ***, and wont support the card for 2 months.

same with the new NV card, its gonna be about 5-10% faster that the 7970 and not worth the price.
the one thing i will say is we do need cards with at least 2gb min now, as running BF3 uses 5gb system ram and 2.1gb card ram, and thats now, so for the future....

I've seen so many nvidia paid shills posting lies about the new NV card, 2x the power of the 580, what a joke.
I have a ASUS 7970 3GB and have battlefield 3 on one 1080 monitor, i set bf3 to ultra, and set the driver to HQ, and SSAA, 8x AA EQ
it uses 1900mb of GFX ram, i've even seen it go over 2gb, and thats with one monitor, not three
So for nvidia to bring out a capped restricted bottle necked card is a stupid thing to do and no its not going to be 2x the speed of the 580 as shills like Hassan Mujtaba posts.
it will be just over the speed of the 7970, but with only 2gb of ram, so is out of date before it comes out.
i'm no amd fan and wanted to go nvidia this time,i'm just a pc user on the side of us, the users.
the 7970 driver is the worst driver i've ever seen (amd, if you read this, why haven't you fixed wait for vertical refresh Vsync allways on for older games, its never worked since vista)
with the new navida card, you can forget about running three monitors with new games and drivers on ultra, why would nv take a step back!
i made a video of me on BF3 with the game and driver set to ultra, as you can see, its 1900mb, so with three monitors, it will need the 3gb.

I'm sick of people posting that games with one monitor at 1080p only need 1gb to 1.5gb, they should test what they say, instead of repeating what someone told them.

ALL CARDS NEED TO BE 3GB AND 512BIT!

nvidia your a bunch of ass holes, who are more concerned about stopping reviewers posting good things about AMD, and paying shills to post lies to put people off buying a 7970, than making cool fast cards.

AMD your a bunch of ass holes who cant make a driver that works properly when you release a new card (by the time you get the driver right, you release a new card)

your both a bunch of ass holes for releasing new cards like cod games, make a powerful card thats 2x the speed of the old one it replaces, THEN RELEASE IT, even if it were every two years... STOP RIPPING US ALL OFF!!!

you are the first user who are telling that most of the users are saying the card is awesome and benchmarks has been made by many experts in other other sites benchmarks have been made to show the performance of the card to the people who dont have that much experience well ok i believe you but what about others maybe the fault will be in your card or that will be an duplicate made where you buy from or u r an lier saying all sh**t about an good card in my words i can say that hd 7970 is 30x better then hd 5870 so please stop your stupidity just check your card faulty one.

I had a 5870, upgraded to a 7970 on release. 1080p resolution is garbage. Any modern high end GPU with 1 gb of VRAM can run BF3 at 1080p on ultra with no AA. Now, try turning all the eye candy on with the 5870 and enjoy your slide show. I game at 1920x1200 resolution and with everything maxed, AA, deferred AA all that stuff its smooth as butter. So now tell me again how the 5870 is better than a 7970. So judging on my personal experience, your personal experience means absolutely zilch. And since you are an asshat to boot, kindly piss off.

I haven't seen anybody mention that there are actually 2GB 5870 cards (Most were Eyefinity6 cards). I own two of them in CFX. Overclocked on my 2600k (960/1260), I get a much higher Pscore in 3DM2k11 than a 7970 :)  I mean, 7924 in that graph. That's actually pathetic. Most I've seen with a 2600k score around 8800. I'm getting P9554 on my 2GB 5870 CFX setup

If your current 5870 is only a 1GB card, I can't advise getting a second as you'll still only have an "effective" 1GB framebuffer.

But if you already have a 2GB model, adding a second 2GB 5870 would get you slightly higher performance than a 7970 in *most* games. There are a few games where the 7970 just thrashes a crossfired 5870 according to the benchmarks I've seen. However, I'd bet 10 to 1 that nearly every review site comparing a 5870CFX setup to a 7970 are using 1GB cards

btw, selling mine atm :)
