Just bought a used gtx580 for £255, but wondering if it would be better to sell it on for a small loss (stupid ebay sellers fees) of about £10-20 and invest in a hd7950?
Another reason I am thinking of selling it on is that I am concerned that the reference gtx580 I bought will be noisy whilst gaming

I would like to play the latest games at 1920x1080 on high settings

The GTX 580 and the 7950 are quite similar in performance. I wouldn't bother with the hassle of selling your 580 for the 7950 - it just doesn't give enough performance upgrade to go for it.

Edit: BTW, where the 7950 and the 7970 shine are at higher resolutions than 1080P.

Keep your GTX 580. The reference cooler is actually very quiet and it will dominate any game you throw at it. The 7950 might even be a little louder. The 7950 is not actually a performance upgrade and you lose PhysX and better driver support in the 580.

"Given our experiences, we don't think the Radeon HD 7950 is a worthy upgrade from a GeForce GTX 580 in performance or gameplay experience. If you have a GeForce GTX 580 buying a Radeon HD 7950 won't significantly impact your gaming experience in a meaningful way."

Splendid
I would keep the 580 myself , the only upgrade I would consider if was you would be a 7970 , a 7950 and 580 are on par , sometimes the 7950 does beat it , but to me it just isnt worth the upgrade.
The 580 is an awesome card, you could also wait for the new 680 and then consider to upgrade then, hopefully it will have a great leap in performance over a 580.

Probably not worth the trouble but the custom 7950 are some of the quietest and most efficient cards you can buy so its up to you.

the sapphire 7950 OC is as quiet fulling loaded as the 580 at idle just to give you an idea, might be worth it depending on how much you hate fan noise.

7950 runs cooler and eats less power, 10-15% faster right I think with drivers releases that gap will get a little bigger. I say Keep your 580 wait till Nvidia releases Kepler then make your decision

If you already bought the 580gtx selling it to buy a 7950 would be a waste. If you want to do such a thing sell it to buy a 7970 but upgrading from a 580 to a 7950 wpuldn't wortht he money.

I havent tried out my gtx580 yet but I am pretty worried about the fan noise as I want a quiet build... I was pretty naive when I bought it yesterday >.< I know it isn't loud as such, but it isnt exactly quiet (apparently)...

I'm concerned about waiting until kepler comes out as the resale value of my gtx580 will almost definitely go down further... might sell my card now/soon for higher return and hold out on intel hd graphics for a month or two :|

On a different topic, is it better to get sapphire or xfx version of hd7950? I know sapphire seems better, but its also more expensive in the uk
