8gb Ram upgrade question

I recently considered upgrading this pretty old gaming rig and was seeing how it would handle;

P5QL-Pro Motherboard
Intel core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83ghz
AMD Radeon 6790 1gb
Antec 500w Earthwatts
Corsair XMS2 4 GB : 2 x 2 GB Memory - DIMM 240-pin - 800 MHz

I was thinking of upgrading this to 8GB RAM with 4x2gb Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066 Mhz,
would this require me to purchase a new PSU and would this mobo handle it due to the Chip now running 4 sticks instead of the usual 2?

Thanks in advance.

  1. You do know that 8gb of DDR2 RAM costs like 150$ right. You could buy a new mobo, as well as 8gb of DDR3 RAM for the same price.
  2. I agree with Gary, DDR2, don't bother, in 2 years we'll be on DDR4.

    HOWEVER, if you insist, whether or not you can use 8GB depends on your op system. The board supports up to 16GB, however, Windows XP for example, does not. 32 bit versions of Vista does not either. And no, you don't need a new PSU to upgrade RAM.
  3. if you want to stick with that board, you might as well not upgrade at all. 4gb is all you really need if you are going to use it for gaming.
