Dell Dimension E520 graphics card

Hello,

My monitor is flickering. I tried a different monitor and it still flickers. I'm guessing I need to replace the Dell Dimension E520's graphics card.

Is that something a mere mortal can do without special tools and skills? What would the card cost? I'm not looking to play games, simply replace the card I have (if I have diagnosed the problem correctly).

Your thoughts? Please advise. Thanks.

the dell e520/521 came with the nvidia 7300le. simply replace the old card with a new card and you will be good to go. you did not post a budget but the DELL 300W PSU was solid enough for an mass PC maker. you do have two issues

1. stick to a PCI-E 1.0 or 2.0 card that runs of a single slot with no need for extra power (2.1 cards like the AMD 6670 can have issues with old DELL BIOS).

2. you have a BTX mobo rather then ATX. your video card will go in fan side up rather then the more common fan side down. you also have a chip cooler stick out from the mobo that will block most dual slot video cards so stick to single slot card

According to the Dimension E520's manual you have a PCI-e x16 slot for a video card.

You can purchase the following Radeon HD 4550 for $19.99 after a $20 rebate. Strangely enough, you have to add it to your cart in order to see the link to the rebate form.

If you are unsure how to install a video card, then you can ship it to me and I will install it for you for a nominal fee of $10,000. Plus you need to pay shipping both ways.

Or you can watch the following instructional video and do it yourself for free.

@OP: You can pick out 4550, agree with that.

Thanks to all for your candor and expertise.

For reasons known only to Mr. Dell and the demons of microprocessors, the flickering has mysteriously ceased. I will wait and see...

Flickering returned. I have ordered the VGA XFX HD-455X-ZAFR HD4550 R from Newegg.

I bought the graphics card and installed it -- all according to your advice. Everything seems to have gone smoothly except that now, when I boot up, I get a message that says "Floppy diskette seek failure. F1 to continue. F2 to run setup utility." Strange. Any idea what that is all about? Did I knock something out of alignment when I installed the graphics card?

BTW, thanks again for your expert advice. I really appreciate it!

Great advice. Thanks. I don't see any "gold cup" images to click. Where are they hiding? Anyway, your advice was perfect!
