Here are my system specs

CPU: AMD Phenon 9850 BE
RAM: Corsair DDR2 1066 4gb (dual channel kit)
MOBO: ASUS M3A78
PSU: Rosewill 550w
GFX: Sapphire AMD 6870HD
OS: Windows 7 ult 64

Here is my problem, the computer has been fine for years (obviously a bit older system based on the parts.) Never had a single issue other than software related things that a clean OS install couldn't fix. Recently I started getting lockups, not BSOD's but lockups when doing simple tasks (web browsing, looking through pictures, listening to music) but if I had a memory intensive process (SWTOR, Skyrim, WOW) running I was fine.

The computer will become unresponsive and no input will work but I still have mouse control, a few seconds later mouse control is gone and everything is locked up. Only resolution is a reset.

First thing I did was run the DBAN software and completely nuked my hard drive and did a clean windows 7 install. Still froze even with just basic windows drivers, nothing 3rd party installed.

I ran a MEMtest for about 2 hours with both sticks and received no errors, ran mem test on each individual stick for about an hour a piece and no errors from either stick.

Pulled one stick of RAM and no lockups, computer runs fine. I should mention that it doesn't matter which stick or which slot I put it in the computer runs fine for simple tasks.

I have tried running both sticks in every slot combination I can and I still get the same problem. I've adjusted voltage and clock settings in my bios up and down and no matter what I use for settings it still locks up.

any ideas?

Could be your Motherboard.. I mean that is quite a old chipset you got.

Wouldn't it lockup no matter what if it was the mobo? How come using only 1 vs 2 sticks causes it?
