You don't need Norton. And unless you have speakers that cost upwards of 150$, don't bother with a sound card.
Also, you don't need a tool kit, you need a screwdriver, that's it, but if you want it, go ahead.

A free program like AVG or Avast is all you really need. If you want Norton, go ahead and get it. But the best internet security is your brain looking at a website called thisisnotascamfreeipad.com and not clicking on it.

+1 i just use microsoft security essentials and common sense when browsing.
when i used AVG i did prefer it over avast, seemed to run "quieter" but that was a few years ago.

Not really . Any webpage you view could be infected even if its creator and host did not set it up that way .

AVAST is good .
Norton is better , and includes the firewall . At this level of budget I'd include it

Actually, Security Essentials is supposed to be better than all of those, and it doesn't slow down your machine. At any rate, there are many other respected anti-virus programs out there, so the least the author can do is read about them before making a decision. ESET NOD32 is highly regarded by many.

As for a firewall, well I recommend COMODO Internet Security (although only install the Firewall). It is considered by some to be the best Firewall for Windows, and it's free.

The truth is that it's much more important to be safe online than to have all the latest expensive software to protect you. Surfing habits, staying away from shady websites (even though perfectly legitimate websites can be compromised) and using a browser safely are the best ways to avoid becoming a botnet, or having keyloggers steal your credit card information. To be safe on Firefox I recommend installing the NoScript addon as well as AdBlockPlus; equivalent addons exist for other browsers.

yeah that a good build. though i must admit to being a little in the stone age and think a platter should always be in a box.
