We've essenstially seen what the new generations have to offer, but what
more could we get out of gaming 5 years... 10 years or even more down the
track.

Just a graphics and sound overhall, with a few new 'nice' ideas here and
there will not be enough eventually. Some big steps must be taken here and
there, to lead cutting edge design and to create benchmarks & what is
considered the norm.

I am very intrigued by the idea of VR making a comeback, and no I'm not
talking goggles etc, I'm thinking of FULL immerision within a gaming
environment. Sure, we have along way to go to reach that level, and many
hurdles to overcome but who knows? By 2020 I imagine that gaming will not be
as we know it today, in fact I gaurante that fact.

As we saw with the xbox & ps2, new novel ideas were brought to the forefront
well and truely after the release of the consoles. For example Xbox Live,
and PS2's eyetoy. Maybe the biggest changes will occur not with new
generations, but within them. Where will the Xbox 360 & PS3 lead us in a few
years? I just hope it's a place with new ideas & big steps forward.

Forget gfx, forget sound, the real changes that need to start happening are
in gameplay. Thus, there is only one word that springs to mind - Immersion.

What do you think?

I agree. There certainly will always be room for improvement. However,
I see the next step to be total integration and multitudes of
functions. Though Sony and MS want to do this already, they are just
scratching the surface. They will be done by the time an XBOX or PS2
can eliminate all other equipment, aside from a TV, in your home.

Total immersion and VR seem a logical progression, though at this point
it may become a niche market. I am not sure how many people are
interested to take the stop of feeling completely in the game, in the
sense of not being able to really destinguish where the game starts and
ends. I can also forsee an increasingly avid discussion of how real
games should get, amidts the constant blames that games supposidly
cause an increase in violence in people (think of it what you want, the
fact is that the discussion is out there.) Can you imagine the
discussions when GTA starts looking and feeling as if you really were
doing all the stuff in the game? Whoa!
