Hi all, just after a bit of advise regarding building dad a new work PC. :bounce:

his current work machine is an AMD x64 4800+, 4gb ddr2-800 with a geforce ti4200 graphics card. He wants to replace his work machine as the performance isn't the best compared to what he's using at home (phenomII 955 /w 8gb ddr3)

CPU
He would like something a bit faster than the 955, as like myself i dont like going sideways. I was originally looking at the i3 2100/i32130 however they seems relatively on par with the PhenomII 955, so thought perhaps the i5 2500k could be an option for him. i know this chips performance is amazing as a few of my friends own these, and i own the i7 2600k.

I have a few questions. I am based in New Zealand, the price of the i3 2100 is $180, whereas the i5 2500k is $280. not having used an i3 , and with the overclockability of the i5 K series, im leaning towards him spending the extra coin to have a processor that will give strong performance for at 18-24months. even a jump to 4ghz on a stock cooler would be nice.

Is the performance difference justified by the extra price ? i am guessing so.

ivy bridge ?? i havent looked into this at all, no time sadly and would love a quick rundown on whats available in comparison to the i5

Motherboard
Also - thoughts on motherboard ? Onboard Graphics would be a big help here. I dont see any point in my father spending money on a graphics card for a work machine. he isnt doing any image processing with the large pictures, nor gaming just displaying them, so i dont think anything more than onboard is required .. as long as it can run two ram-sticks ( either 1x4gb or 2x 4gb ) Support two drives in RAID and obviously support the unlock side of the K series. this limits me to Z68/P67 right ? i would prefer to keep the cost of the motherboard as low as possible, and would prefer either Asus or Gigabyte however am open to suggestions.

Chipset
I have been out of studying the hardware game since i bought my i7 2600k back in feb/march 2011, so my understanding between p67/h67/z68 escapes me, is there one of the chipsets that take advantage of the graphics processing that the sandybridge offers, while allowing the unlock from K series ?

is there any point going to 8gb over 4gb for an office machine like this ?

Power Supply
Nothing flash is required here, may even re-use the 450W from the xp4800+ machine, so may not be included as part of the build .. however if there is something that is very quiet at a low cost without sacraficing performance this may be looked into.

Things required.
1) Motherboard
2) cpu
3) ram
4) power supply (maybe)

hard-drives/optical drives we can use from the previous build, and he has decided on the CoolerMaster HAF912 for the case, as he has one of these for his home machine and quite likes it.

Appreciate your input as always :) !!!

Motherboard : after some quick research it seems Z68 offers overclocking of the K series, and onboard sandybridge GPU.

after any opinion on Z68 motherboards with minimal features

Thanks as always!
