Hey guys,

Been searching for a pc for my lad whos going to be 12 but cant seem to find any good dell deals or refurbs so thoughtid finally take a crack at building a pc. Im good with regards to software but always been crap at physical stuff such as diy so ive always stayed clear.

My budget was initially 350 and I wanted to go with the AMD4100 but reading reviews people said they had to update the BIOS on their Mother boards using older processors which threw me a bit so I went back to the drawing board and come up with the below list.

Intel Core i3 2120 3.3GHz Socket 1155 3MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor
Asus P8Z68-V LX Socket 1155 Onboard graphics output 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V
Seagate 500GB 3.5" SATA-III 6Gb/s Barracuda Hard Drive 7200RPM 16MB Cache
Xenta SATA 3 Cable 6Gbps - 46cm
Asus GTX 550 Ti 1GB GDDR5 VGA DVI HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card
Coolermaster Elite 330 Case With Coolermaster eXtreme Power 500W PSU

The total works out at about £410 which is above my budget but the specs of the kit all seem fairly decent if it all fits together! It's my first build and wanted to build it with my son for his Birthday.

I've gone for a 500GB HDD as their current revo is only using 120gb and I don't need a OS as I can get that through my MSDN account.

Any advice on bits that could be swapped or problems I might encounter during the build e.g. extra cables I need to order would be greatly appreciated. The main thing that's worrying me is the 500W is that enough and will all the actual bits fit into the case and mother board.

Cheers,
John.

It will work for a budget PC. I would suggest a better PSU. The wattage is more then fine, but that brand, especially that model is very bad. Maybe go with a Seasonic, corsair, or antec PSU. Not sure what site you use overseas maybe if you can find one of the following:

according to this:
http://images10.newegg.com/BizIntell/tool/psucalc/index.html

you need around 350 watts min. so 400 and up would be good enough.

500W is more than enough but that PSU in particular isn't good. I would get the PSU and case separately to make sure you get a quality PSU, that's important.

Also, there isn't actually much of a difference between the i3 and Pentium G series in games and the Pentiums are a lot cheaper. 4GB of RAM would be fine for games as well, the extra 4GB wouldn't really make any difference.

This would perform about the same (if not better) in games and it's far cheaper, with a better quality PSU:

Intel Pentium G620 - £44.39
4GB Mushkin Enhanced Silverline (2x2GB) 1333Mhz - £19.99
ASRock H61 H61M-VS Intel H61 - £34.79
MSI GTX 560 1GB - £119.99
Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 500GB - £47.99
Corsair CX-500 500W - £44.99
Fractal Design Core 1000 - £25.99

Total - £338.12 on www.aria.co.uk
