I don't know the brand of the psu, but it's rated at 80+bronze. The 5870 is still a very strong gpu and the athlon clocked that high should help alleviate the bottleneck that the lack of l3 cache creates. For $350 its a pretty good deal.

its okay, but if you ever plan on upgrading, you almost have to upgrade everything, since the cpu may bottleneck the gpu if the gpu upgrade is large enough.

Kingwin power supplies suck the big one, but other than that, not bad. When you take into account the operating system, you definitely could not build a better machine for $350.

Basically, it's not going to be super high-end by today's standards, but it'll still be pretty good for gaming and I'd say above-average compared to what you'll find in a typical non-enthusiast's house. You can certainly build a better machine out of new parts, but it's not worth doing unless you a) want to spend the time on it and b) can spend around $600-$700 to make it worth your while.

See if you can talk him down to $300 since the parts are a couple years old, then put in a power supply like this:

very solid 2010-ish build. should do what you want for a year or two. NOTHING in it should be transferred to a new build.

Kingwin is a decent brand, though not top-tier.

indeed, not even the GPU.

this is the 5870 ($500 when new) against the $250 HD 7850:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/511?vs=549

The 7850 is a superior card, 2 generations newer and half the price. Now, think about what a $200-250 video card will be like in another year or two compared to your 5870, when we are yet another generation or two along.

this $350 computer will be a decent game player now, maybe through 2013, but by then even that GPU will be horridly obsolete.

I'm not saying that the craigslist computer is BAD. I think its a decent buy! but use it up, don't upgrade its parts -- well, maybe the case if you really like it.

i'd tell your dad that this computer will probably last you through high school -- indeed, if you aren't worried about ultra settings, it probly will play games coming out in 2014/15 at about medium settings -- this computer will be at about the capabilities (maybe slightly slower cpu, slightly faster gpu) of the XBox 720 and Playstation 4
