There are no drivers for Windows 7. Often Vista drives will work when a device has no Windows 7 drivers available but there are no Vista drivers either. From reading the reviews it seems this device was new in 2000-2001. It is just too old to have new drivers. Seems like you might be out of luck.

Hi,

As other members within this thread have pointed out, unfortunately, the Canon CanoScan N650U is not compatible with Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit as we can see from the Windows 7 Compatibility Center.

You might want to also consider the use of Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC, Windows XP Mode works in two ways – both as a virtual operating system and as a way to open programs within Windows 7. In some cases, you can install hardware devices and use the drivers designed for Windows XP within Windows 7 via Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC. This will not work in every scenario with hardware compatibility concerns however it will work in some.

The Windows XP driver designed for the Canon CanoScan N650U is available from Canon here.

Another option would be to try to install the scanner driver within compatibility mode.

For your convenience I have included the instructions for Compatibility Hardware Device Drivers by Microsoft MVP, Ronnie Vernon, from the TechNet forums:

COMPATIBILITY HARDWARE DEVICE DRIVERS:

1. Place the driver installation file on the Desktop.

2. Right Click the driver installation file and select Properties/Compatibility Tab. Select the appropriate options in from the list. In your case, you would select Windows Vista.

3. Click Apply/OK.

4. Right Click the file and select the Run As Administrator option to install.

Not quite true. There are 64 bit drivers for Windows 7, and there is a 64bit vdersion of Canoscan, but Canoscan won't talk to the scanner using TWAIN. On the other hand, the ScanSoft OCR software will talk to the scanner and works perfectly. So TWAIN is the focus of the problems. The drivers work OK. I'm using them right now.

Canon doesn't seem interested. It seems they are saying "New drivers - new toolkit - what more do you want?". Well, I want a fix to the TWAIN problem!

If you wish to use a Canscan N650U windows 7 and are having a hard time with the drivers auto installing or using the old/original drivers. Use VueScan!!! It's supposed to be able to let use a scanner even if your OS doesn't support it. I tried it with my friend's Canscan N650U and IT WORKED!!! He has Win x64.
