Hi, first post here, i have an important question hopefully someone can answer for me. I recently bought 128 mb of pc2100 DRR ram, and i am putting it together with a asus a7a266 motherboard, with a athalon t-bird 1 gig cpu. someone told me that the DDr ram isnt compatable with athalons and it only works on pentuim 4's.
here are his words : " you cant use more than pc150 unless you unlock your multiplier and you can use the DDR function therefore its pointless"

"Athlon Processors dont support the DDF Function and unless you UNLOCK you Clock Multiplier you cant use more then pc133 actually ram."

Are these statements true?
plz help, i wanna see if hes a bastard or not.

There are DDR motherboards for Athlons. That PC2100 DDR has a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 2.1GB/s. Pentium 4 CPUs use a different kind of DDR memory called RDRAM. PC800 RDRAM has a maximum bandwidth of 3.2GB/s.

Sure you can...

You must use a FSB of 133 or higher to get any benefit from the PC2100 though.

If you use anything lower then it will report the memory as PC1600, but it still works though.

Yes, DDR Ram is the succesor for your reguluar pc100/pc133/pc150 mem. It is next in line/next generation. P4's messed up when they went with rdram, they should've went with the mainstream ddr/sdr(at the time). But if they would have followed the sdram path, they wouldn't be able to perform faster then their very own first generation p3's due to memory bandwith. What your friend was saying about unlocking your multiplier to install memory faster then pc133 is true IF YOU ARE overclocking you athlon system! Then you will be increasing the speed of your frontside bus which includes your pci and [-peep-].

The mobo that you purchased, and as long as it dosen't have the majic chipset, will ONLY accept ddr memory.(I'm assuning you purchased the a7v133a.266)

Anyways, have fun, and tell your friend to not speak uneducated things, it really makes techno savvy people laugh...

If I were you man, I would go with AMD's Chipset for now. It seems to be the best performaer/for stabilty! Read this article about why I would wait for a minute before I jumped on the "Newest Bandwagon". As far as the chipset now is concerned, they isn't anything drastically wrong with it, I was refering to if you were going to use sdram, you would need the Majic chipset to use it in your new board, but you couldn't use ddrasm at the same time.... so it is pointless to have the sdram slots, unless of course you are the type who spends every cent exactly when the board comes out regardless of its quality / stabilty. anyways I think you get the idea.

so what board do you recommend for me?

i have a t-bird 100 gig processor
128mb of pc2100 DDR ram...
motherboard: ??????

-i dont wanna wait TOO long, but maybe u could help me find a great board for this setup

I would go with this one right now... if you really need to get one now! :)  I know how you feel... But If I were to choose right now I would get the Asus A7M 266 AMD 761 chipset AMD Athlon/Duron Socket A ATX MB. This way I can have future support for the Athlon 4 Desktop series.

Go to asus's werbsite and look at the A7M266 based on the AMD 761 chipset. Is is proven to be the best performer out of all the DDr MOBO's. www.asus.com, or just read this next quotation, which is exactly what it says..

"A7M266 (ATX, DDR DRAM, AGP Pro/4X, 266MHz FSB, Ultra DMA/100)
Now support AMD® DuronTM / AthlonTM 550MHz ~ 1GHz+ CPU, 4 PCI, 1 PCI/AMR shared, 2x PC2100/PC1600 DDR DIMM, AGP Pro/4X, Stepless Frequency Selection, PC Health Monitoring and optional 3Com® 100/10Mbps LAN and Cmedia CMI8738 Audio. "

Thats the Mobo would get.. Screw needing support for SDRAM, and I think that is one of the marketing points for MAjic chipset, is having the support for sdram. SDRAM is going to be absolute soon anyways. The seemily "10%" increase in performance portrayed by DDr memory is FREAKING HUGE increase in performance cwhen compared to the small 1-2 % increases when previous steps in memory speeds accured.. Anyways. There you go.. You will not regret it !!!! :)

Thanks man! u know your stuff....also, the althlon processor i have is 200 mghz fsb...that would be a problem for me....since the board is 266 FSB and all...right?
Oh yeah, are there new boards coming out that are DDR compatible, will they blow these recent boards outta the water?, cause maybe i will wait.

-maybe if u have e-mail, or icq/AIM i could ask some questions...it would be easier and faster...my icq # is 50891155 - Otherwise, thx for your time.

Hey just e-mail me @ trakor@hotmail.com, I usually use that IM, but when I'm in 98 I have ICQ running. As far as your Proccessor, I have the same one. I use the A7V KT133 MOBO with supporft for 8 ide's, 4 of those using the promis's ata 100 onborard controller. (I'm sure you've heard of it). You could probably get that one right now for relatively cheap I think. I'm personally waiting for next summer to upgrade to the best and proven MOBO (2002 summer), then I'm going to upgrade to the Corsair, or the best , mnaybe even CAS 1 at that time, WHO knows). But this 900 mhz @thlon w/A7V MOBO kicks ass for me right now, and trust me I put it through hell :) .. Get that one for now if you wanna be on the safe side until next summer.

Anyways, thats my opion... again :)  IM though if you want instant answers.

Whoever told you that is mistaken. I suggest you take all advice from this forum. We know what we're talking about (most of us).
