Is it worth saving the few bucks buying refurbished hard drives or should I just shell out the cash for the brand new one???

Never EVER buy a refurbished HDD. Just save up for a new one. Hell, for the price of a refurbished drive you can get a new SATA II 7200 160GB or 250GB.

Depends on the circumstance. While its true generally refurbs work just fine, they generally have a short warranty.
