OPINIONS NEEDED on cpu/motherboard purchase

Hello,
I'm in the market for a new cpu and board for video/pic editing, some CAD, with the capability of upgrading and adding on.
What's truly the best bang for the buck? AMD or Intel. and which bundles do you recomend?

I like to separate bang for buck into this:
Intel = bang
AMD = buck

All cleverness aside, I would recommend Intel and I know you didnt mention this, but a GPU with latest version of Open GL (something new).
