Monitor Troubles HELP!!!!

Hey guys, ill try to make this as detailed as possible, being my first post but I seriously need some help! Ok lately my monitor had been flickering real bad then stopped, so I did not worry much about it. But the serious problem I have now is the last 2 days my monitor would just randomly go into power saving mode either while writing a document or gaming, which frustrated me. Now I cant even get the monitor to get out of power saving mode when the computer boots. Below are some of my specs below if that helps. system is like 2 yrs old wen i built. never had any serious problems till now

Dell 20 inch monitor
-I use a vga to dvi adapter to connect it to my video card if that may have something to do.

mobo-biostar i believe A790 a3+ i cant remember completely i can look if need b
Cpu- amd 965 quad core
radeon 5770
8g ram
onkia power supply 500 watts
500gb harddrive

The monitor may be going bad. If you can try another I would to check it out.
