Need to connect my dvd writer of desktop to my laptop

Hello everyone ,

I have a desktop which is down for the moment , so I was thinking of how to use its HDD and its dvd writer .
I searched the net and found out that it can be connected either by using a e-sata to sata cable or by using a sub-sata cable .

But connecting is simply by a usb-sata will not let it work coz it needs power supply. So , i was thinking what if I give it power supply from the PSU of my cabinet which still works and then connect it to my laptop using either of the cables ?

I was just thinking of it , haven't tried it yet . So please can someone tell me will it be ok to join my dvd writer with powersupply from my cabinet and then connect it using a e-sata to sata or usb-sata cable ?

Please answer quickly .

and one more thing , if that is possible with dvd write then can it be done with my 5" sata HDD too ?
