Single Opteron 170? Or Dual 248 Opterons?

Which would be a better setup for running some game servers.

A single opteron 170 with dual cores. Or two opteron 248 cpus? I'm assuming the dual 248's but something tells me the 170 might be right up there if not better.

Let me know what is better.

a single dual core opty on a dual processor board (only one socket populated) allows for upgrades in the future, should use less power as well. although the 248 has 2 HTT links and the other has only one HTT link i think that a single dual core opty 170 would be beter (and cheaper) :p

oops i forgot the optoeron 170 is socket 939, so you wont find many dual processor boards for it, well go for the dual core opteron 170 on an nforce 4 motherboard coupled with 2 GBs ddr400 ram. that should do it. :p

...though i would lean towards the core 2 duos right now, they offer more performance and use less power you could get the woodcrest/conroe/allendale instead though... :D

The opteron 170 is a SINGLE socket cpu. So he would have to have the 2xx series equivilant...

The 2x 248 would be faster, its clocked higher (2.2 vs 2.0), has the same amount of cache/core, and 2P systems perform slightly better than dual core. So is money wasn't a concern, and you only had these to options the 2x 248 would be better. But the 170 would have a much lower power consumption, be cheaper, and the performance gap would be incredible.

EDIT: Stupid me. The 248 is probably based on older revision. So it doesn't have SSE3. That would make up for some of the clock speed. So go with the 170. Comparison_248_vs_275
