Risks of too much PSU?

I believe I've overdone it with a recent PSU purchase, a Corsair TX750. Am I going to fry the system? Will the old PSU still do the trick?

Here's the final configuration, once everything's up.

Case: Antec Sonata III 500, about 5 years old (came with 500W Antec EarthWatts PSU)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3V MicroATX LGA 1155
CPU: Intel Quad Core i5-2400 3.1 GHz (3.4 GHz Turbo)
Memory: 8GB (2 x 4GB) G.Skill Sniper Series DDR3-1866 SDRAM
Graphics: eVGA GeForce GTX 560 (Fermi) 1024MB
Sound: Sound Blaster X-Gamer Fatal1ty (from the old system)
HDDs: OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD, the old 500GB Seagate SATA/300 drive, and a new 1TB Seagate SATA III 6.0 Gb/s drive for storage
PSU: Corsair 750W TX750 V2 ATX PSU

I think this is more appropriately a ~500W system. Worst-case scenario, I keep the 750W around for a later SLi upgrade with a new board. I'd appreciate any sage advice.

  1. Btw, I did notice the SATA III drive is going to get throttled by the board, since it only has one 6Gb/s connector. I got the board as part of a Newegg DIY package.
  2. tx750 (i hope it's a "V2") is an excellent power and supply and more than enough for your build.

    your better off using the new power supply and using the old one as back up. with any power supply the devices you uses (ie mb/video card will have the same load on a 400w unit or a 800w unit. it how much amps the devices together draw that going to set the wattages uses of a power supply. with any power supply your better off having it slightly oversized then under. with your old power supply look at the 12v rails and see what it rated. take the cpu wattage and the video card and add them together. that going to be the main load in the computer. with old power supply have to be careful that the caps not dried out or leaking. (newer power supply some have thermal sensing so that the larger 120/140mm fan will spin up as needed.
  5. It is overdone and will operate a bit less efficiently than it would otherwise, but it's not a serious problem.
  6. This only risk is you will spend too much money on some big fancy video card later on like the new hd-8970 or new geforce 780 GTX.
  7. Anyways my corsair CX-600 ran a pair of power hog hd-4870's just fine.

  10. The sata III 6gb connector is for ssd drives. Any mechanical hdd like your seagates are fine with the sataII connectors, even the older sataI is fine because the drives only top out at about 1.3gb/s.
  11. From other threads, it seems you're right. Despite the marketing, the drives still can't reach their stated max transfer.
