i was looking in to buying a tv instead of a monitor for my next computer for the reason so i can also watch tv on it

i have a gts 450 gpu

is this a good idea or is there a catch

Yes, as long as you get the 1080p not the 720p also if you can a120mhz refresh rate, I"m about to do the same thing I'm getting aggravated with my TV tuner card.

My 32" 1080p Sammy HDTV looks as good as my 24" 1080p Asus monitor... but a lot bigger. The only issue you may run into with a HDTV over a monitor, is if/when you need to switch to 1366x768. DX10 and 11 seem to have an issue with HDTVs with certain games that they don't have with monitors. Crysis come to mind...
