I would go with the Intel® Core™ i3-2120 for now and match it up with a Z77 chipset based board like the ASRock Z77 Extreme4. This will open the door for me to upgrade to the Intel Core i5-2500K or the Intel Core i5-3570K in the future and you wouldnt be locked into older technology by using an older Intel Core 2 Duo or Intel Core 2 Quad.
  2. if you can find an i5 2400 on sale or used cheap, that would be the best starting point.
  3. The Q9450 is still a great CPU for games since it is what I have in my system. But at this point in time there is no real reason to build a new PC around a 4+ year old CPU.

I would opt for the i3-2100. The vast majority of games only use 2 cores. I bought the Q9450 so that I can play games and encode video at the same time. :)

Getting the i5-2400 as mentioned above is not a bad idea if you can save up money for it. There are a small number of games that can make use of 4 cores (compared to games using only 2 cores).
  4. The i3-2120 is the best choice of those listed for pure gaming. It's hyper threading and its Sandy Bridge architecture make it game way out of proportion to its dual core cost.
