I own a desktop with the following components:
C2D Quad 6600
Asus maximus formula x38
8GB DDR2 800MHz

I had a ATI 4870X2 I bought second hand on eBay but it went kaput a couple of months ago. With the approach of the release date for Mass Effect 3 I decided to buy a new graphic card to replace it. I play mainly at 1080p so my question is whether is better to invest in 2x6850 in a crossfire setup or just take the single card route with a 6950 1GB version?

Thank you very much in advance,
Bruno Santos

I always like to go with a single faster card, less hassles, less power usage, no microstuttering.

It also depends on what power supply you have unless you plan on replacing that too.

You may also want to consider new cards coming out in March. HD7850/7870/7890. Benchmarks should be out soon.

if u can , get an Unlockable 6950 and unlock it to a 6970 .
u'll still have a PCiex remaining so u can add another one later ...
( but as suggested , i would go for a HD7xxx )

Why dont you just keep your 4870x2?
I dont think think You'll have any problems maxing out Mass Effect 3 with it.
And if you still want to upgrade it will be better to just wait for AMD 78xx series.

Like I said on the OP the 4870x2 went kaput it no longer shows an image on the screen with the message VGA BIOS being displayed on the board LCD. I guess I will have to wait until the new AMD become available then
