CPU upgrade for music production?

Hi all,
I currently have an AMD Phenom 11 quad core on a GeForce6100PM-M2 motherboard. During music production my CPU is at it's limit whilst mixing effects and now struggling. I need to upgrade and need some advice.
I don't mind if I need to change the motherboard to accomodate intel if needed, but I'm aware there are some faster AMD's out there now.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Martin

Do you have a budget?

What is your budget and what country are you located in?

An i5 may seem suitable for you :)

Hi Guys,
I'm based in UK and although I would like to spend as littles as necessary, I will also spend whatever I need to to make sure I have an efficient music production engine.
I'm thinking to start with that intel processors are going to be the way forward.

I think most will concur that Intel is the way to go at the moment for music work. If you are pegging out a Phenom II maybe a slightly faster one will buy you a little bit more time but not much.

I think i5/i7 would give you a decent boost and their floating point/AVX seems to be nicely balanced. Much as I love AMD the initial impressions of the FX-8150 in music production are a bit spotty.

There will probably be a few threads and some decent information over in the Sound On Sound forums and the music rig chap from Scan hangs around there too.

Yup, you need Intel inside.

What software are using? When does it hit 100%? Transcoding?

My first thought would be a quad-core i5 and a Z77motherboard. What other specs is the machine? RAM etc?

I'm using Cubase SX.
it hits 100% when applying effects plug ins. the track then struggles to play consitently. i check the VST performance and can see the CPU at virtually 100%.

I've got 3.0 gig DDR2 RAM
1 x 2T hard rive
1 x 500G hard drive

Thanks

You're looking at an i5.

Do you know if Cubase SX has GPU Acceleration?
