Display Driver

Hello,
I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 on it and I have this old HP monitor that a friend gave to me. This laptop is roughly 5months old and works great the majority of the time. However, after about 1 month of using my HP monitor as an extended screen, it started crashing my display driver on my laptop. Whenever I plugged the monitor cable in, my laptop's screen would flicker black and continue to crash until I took the cord out.
Is this because of a faulty monitor or is there something wrong with my laptop? It worked fine for a while and now it is having these issues.

Does the laptop work fine when using only the built-in display? Does the external monitor work with another computer? Does the laptop do the same thing with a different monitor?

The laptop works great when only using the built-in display, and the external I'm not sure about because I got it from a friend. It did have some issues turning on and acquiring a signal though. I've only ever hooked the laptop up to that monitor and a few TVs, I don't have another monitor to try.

It sounds like the laptop is fine and the monitor is flaky. Try it with another PC.
