if your motherboard is this one:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5KPLAM/#specifications
with a x16 pci slot you can use any graphics card with pci-express that will work properly, the problem is to check if your cpu will not be bottlenecking it, i see that your motherboard can use Quad Core Cpus, what cpu you are using?

well if your cpu is good enough you can buy one of those graphics card that will be able to run today games:

for the cash: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127545

if you can increase your outcome go for this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127565

if you can't find a good price graphics go for a cheaper one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127573
you will be able to run all games today and last year with any of those graphics card, the difference will be the graphics/resolution you will be able to set.

Actually, you are good enough, because you have a PCI-E slot in your motherboard. Which means you can put PCI-E cards there, but before making a recommendation to look for a sub-$200 card, I'd say, give us your rest of your specs. We can't make decision on motherboard only, we now only know that PCI-E cards can be put on your motherboard, but not anything else :).

your cpu is very bad for gaming, if you are thinking is gaming you will probably need to change that CPU and not just the graphics card, so are you thinking in changing it in future? if yes you can take a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130660 with that budget, but otherwise if you are really not thinking in changing cpu (what will need replacement of Motherboard/memory probably) it will not worth the money because you will be bottlenecked and your cpu will not let your video card fully work on the system, so i think anything higher than a:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161395
will be bottlenecked.

also what is your Power SUpply unit? changing the graphics will require a good ammount of power if your psu is not good enough you may need to change it before changing the GPU

Very bad is not the word to use for that cpu, it is just mediocre. It can overclock quite easily however and at 3.5ghz it would be more than fine for most current games.
It is not your motherboard that will limit what cards you can use, but rather your power supply which you have yet to say anything about.
