Our trusty Olympus Stylus was left on the roof of our car and slide off
when we turned on to the main highway, but it still works just fine.
The trip from a desktop to the floor left our Kodak DC240 a bit addled.
Everything appears to work, images in the viewfinder, autofocus, flash,
various menus etc etc, except the darn thing doesn't capture any
pictures. I have tried a couple flash cards, formated one with no
apparent problem, but the picture count isn't changing, and review says
no images something.
Any suggestions?
BTW Amazon.com has a 90 day refurb Nikon Coolpix 3100 for $112 shipped,
which I am finding hard to resist.
OTOH if I could bonk the DC240 on the table a couple times, poke some
hidden reset thingie, or even open it up and wiggle stuff making it
work I would keep it happily.

Go for the new camera. I wouldn't want to trust the old one even if you
could get it to work again.

If you haven't done this sort of thing before, (first practise on
something with zero value) then don't - unless of course you are going
to toos it anyway and don't care about the outcome..
It is quite possibly something simple - on two occasions I have pulled
friends digicams apart and discovered that cable connections had
simply come adrift. But I have a fair bit of engineering and
electronics background to help.. Might take a while to open the case
without breaking anything, and then gently dissassembling a few items
(go slow and careful, take notes as you go, work on a large white
sheet on the floor.. 'boing.. oops I wonder where that little spring
went?').... but if you are lucky, the problem may be perfectly obvious
even to a casual observer. Or it may not...
Bear in mind manufacturers don't really like amateurs doing this, so
they tend to use hidden clips, proprietary screw heads, and other nasty
tricks to make it a little difficult... And I would be surprised if
you can get it fixed for much less than $112...

Hi Dangler,
Sorry to hear about the trouble you had. Always a frustrating experience.
For the money, there are some great deals out there, and refurbs are
excellent (generally just as good as new). I would seriously consider
another camera as it would doubly frustrating to get the op for a great shot
only to have it come up blank. Check the many sites, eBay, and the Kodak
site if you have an interest. They sell refurbs as well.
Talk to you soon,
Ron Baird
