Well my xbox has started to make some odd high pitch noises. It seems to be
from the hard drive? The sound doesnt go away when you open or close the dvd
tray.
Its either the hard drive or the fan.

So should i take it to be serviced (not sure where). or just play it till it
breaks. The noise is pretty load and annoying.

Yep, ours gets noisy like that from time to time. DH said that we'll just
play this one into the ground until it dies then get the newer version
that's coming out.

Probably just the fan running dry. Open 'er up (torx 10/20 req) and
see/hear. The fan shaft most likely just needs a little cleaning and
lubrication. If it can't be salvaged, replacement fans are under $10.

or just stick a small screwdriver in the blades (only to stop them rotating)
on the fan on the back of the unit, then power up and if the noise still
remains then you know it's not the main case fan.

if it were a Western Digital in there and a really high pitched whine,
it'd most likely be the bearings. (I really hate WD drives). But since
its a Seagate, I don't think that's the case (FDB). Although If I
remember correctly, the Seagate stock that I took out (a LONG time ago)
wasn't the quietest. In any case, like the other gentlemen stated, it
could be fan acoustics. One of the two.
