internet security for the accidental tourist

i recently added a wireless lan to my pc
and i noticed i started picking up another networks signal
they had a good connection so i used it
now how can i protect my pc from being compromised
i`m currently using windows firewall but what else do i need?

you need to find out who that person is and pay them half of the internet bill, then you will be safe.

Who's signal are you picking up? A public hotspot? In that instance just lock down all the resources on your machine with NTFS permissions. You'll need have your partitions formatted NTFS and simple file sharing turned off.


If you mean your picking up you neighbors WLAN then you should think about obtaining honor and ethics. In other words, do not do it.

actually i think it is a companies wlan, i have a lot of industrial buildings near me. i actually i only use the connection to download huge files otherwise i use dial-up. i`m on for like 5min once every-other day, and i keep the card not enabled.

if its a company and they havent protected their wireless then by all means, mooch away. i would install a personal firewall too. not so much a problem now, but back when the blaster worm was running rampant if you werent patched you would be infected if you didnt have a firewall. its still a good idea.
