AMD is discontinuing certain processor models, so they aren't changing the prices on those.

The ones that are staying are the 3800+ 4200+ 4600+ and 5000+ i believe.

It's the L2 cache. Recently, AMD said that they were outfitting their AM2 procs (non FX) with 512 L2 cache and discontinuing the models with 2MB L2 cache The reason for the price difference is because of their rarity now - for example, the new 3800 have 512 L2 cache, the previous model AM2 3800s had 2MB L2 cache).

If you could be so kind as to bear with me, is there a problem with the 4800+ or is it simply a marketing decision? I use the pc for surfing & gaming. Am upgrading from a 3500+ wanting a bit more stability in Empire Earth2 . I currently have a evga7800gt & 2g of corsair, Am hoping that will make a fair gaming rig . Thanks Pireaux

AMD has limited production capacity, and due to competition from intel's Conroe, AMD decided to cut 50 some odd chips and the larger cache chips simply 1: use to much die space and 2: generate more heat than what it takes to aggressively price and market thier CPU's. So comprimises had to be made, and only time will tell if this plan will pay off in the long run. It is a risky manuver for sure.

AMD is also quickly ending the 939 line altogether, not too sure of date, but I believe it to be somewhere near the end of the year.

What effect do you think this will have on the prices after the AMD stock is gone and the only ones around are those from the retailers?

Hey guys, I'm really considering this 4400.

Currently I have an Opty 144 that I haven't had much time to OC yet. I planned on going dual core, just not this soon and I didn't think the 939 stuff was going to go down with the AM2 stuff.

That's a smokin deal on that 4400 with 1 MB cache and an 11 multi though and these things are going to go the way of the Dodo.

Is it worth it or should I stick with my Opty?

Help.

Thanks RichPLS.

I was rather hoping you would chime in on this. I don't plan to go to AM2. I will build a new Conroe system, but not until the dust settles, and maturity on the new platform has set in. So it could be some time before I build anything new. I like the idea of being able to get my hands on another 939 with the larger cache. I've read it doesn't make a huge difference now except a little in games. However that could change down the road and this could add a little longevity to a system that already performs just fine for me.

Thanks.

On a side note, ZipZoomFly has this CPU for $250 and you get a free copy of Age Of Empire III with it and you get free shipping. Order placed!!
