Howdy,

I recently added two 16mb EDO Simms to my Pentium Pro system and experienced massive performance degradation in Windows 98. (eg. screen was taking 30 seconds to refresh)

The memory passed my bios check and correctly reported 96mb instead of 64mb but it just seemed to slow everything down.

I have no idea what speed these two simms are and they were sourced from different places.

Any tips, hints ideas? Do the two simms need to be speed matched?

Regards,

Andy

Answer: YES!

For optimal performance (and sometimes, just so the system will run) the RAM should be the same type and speed. And due to the occasional frequency differences among brands, I'd suggest that the RAM be from the same company.

Your instincts were right.

Now ... to be safe, you should either check the motherboard manual, or the manufacturer's website, and see how the memory should be installed. Different motherboards require different configurations.
