Wifi Card for Gaming

Last response: in Wireless Networking
Share

Hi

I'm moving my PC into another part of the house and will need to be making use of the wifi on a router connected on the other side of the house.

Cutting costs and effort I decided to get a wifi solution.

I mainly play quake live and wont be doing much downloading as I have another PC for that connected via ethernet.

My nokia 5800 gets around 50-60% reception at the location I aim to put my PC.
So. Do I need a pci-e card or will a usb solution suffice?

Line Speed: 384 Kb/s (Yes I do live in SA and yes I am a student)
Current ping: 40ms @ ethernet

Also, what spec card/usb dongle should I get to maintain a ping close to my current ping? I was thinking of this:

Thanks.

I'm in a similar position. I have a cheap belkin USB wifi dongle which I use. I'm not sure if it's worth buying a proper wifi network card. My router isn't brilliant and I have a feeling I would need to upgrade that too.

My answer would be try borrow someone's and try it to see if it works. Sorry I don't have a better solution.

A better card or other wireless option may indeed work better. Or it may not. It may even be worthwhile to get a new router. With wireless there are no guarantees that apply universally, unless you're prepared to spend considerable amounts of money.

If you want something that will be sure to work that is also affordable, you'd need to go with a wired connection. Unfortunately, the viability of this depends on your house construction.
