USB 3.0 and Wireless Connection

Alright, so first of all my system specs are:

Samsung np-rf511
intel i7 2630qm
4g ram
nvidia gt 540m


So here's my problem... I have a My Book Essential; Western Digital 2TB USB 3.0. My laptop has a usb 3.0 slot, but when i connect my hard drive, my wireless goes haywire. The internet completely drops, and comes back as soon as i disconnect my hard drive. I think it might be some sort of conflict with the components but, this is my first time buying a laptop so im not sure. Any suggestions?
